Part 7 – Social Media Back to Basics Series.
If you ever sit down to post on social media and draw a blank, you’re not alone. One of the easiest ways to stay consistent and avoid that “what do I say today?” feeling is to use content pillars.
Content pillars are 3 to 5 core themes that your content will focus on. They act as a guide to keep your posts aligned with your brand and relevant to your audience.
Instead of scrambling for ideas every week, you have a clear framework to work from.
Here are some example content pillars you might use as a small business:
- Educational – tips, how-tos, industry insights
- Behind the scenes – your process, workspace, daily routines
- Promotional – your products or services, launches, offers
- Social proof – testimonials, reviews, user-generated content
- Personal connection – your story, values, relatable posts
You can tailor these to your brand. For instance, a maker might include process videos or inspiration boards. A coach might focus on mindset shifts and client success stories.
Once you’ve chosen your pillars, you can rotate through them across the week or month. This keeps your content varied and balanced, without straying off track.
Here’s how to put them into practice:
- Choose 3 to 5 content pillars that reflect your business goals and your audience’s interests
- Plan 1 post idea for each pillar per week
- Use your calendar or a simple spreadsheet to map them out
Content pillars save you time, reduce decision fatigue, and help you stay focused. They also make sure your content always has a purpose.
